Therapeutic Massage
Does pain or restricted movement keep you from living the life you want? Tension from everyday stresses, repetitive actions on the job, sports injuries and household accidents cause problems that too often take up permanent residence in out bodies. Massage can help.
Massage is a gentle therapy that can relieve pain and is combination with other modalities can help certain conditions and help prevent their return. In some cases, massage can reduce or even eliminate the need for medication or surgery.
Massage is not a single discipline but a family of related arts, each offering different advantages. If you’re plagued by insomnia or simply need to relax, Swedish massage, with its long soothing strokes may be all you need. But if you suffer from painful muscle spasms or need to rehabilitate an injured joint, deep tissue massage may be more helpful. Trigger point therapy can help relieve pain by working and stretching our sensitive spots that cause aches in other parts of the body. Sports massage combines all these techniques to reduce soreness, prevent injuries and treat sprains, strains and tendonitis.
Massage is one of the best antidotes for stress. Massage gives relief from tension headaches caused by stress, gives you more energy, improves your outlook on life and, in the process reduces your likelihood of injury and illness. Massage is an excellent way to help manage the tension from work related stress created by deadlines, endless meetings and the inevitable office politics.
We tailor every session to your individual needs by integrating various techniques into each session in order to provide the best possible results for your particular problem area. If you have any questions whether massage can help your particular problem, please call us at 916-363-7173 for a free consult with our Registered Nurse.
What
is Myofascial Release?
|
| The
John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release approach is safe,
gentle and consistently effective in pro- ducing positive
and lasting results. Myofascial Release™ is a
very effective hands on technique which provides sustained
pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain,
headaches and to restore motion. The theory of Myofascial
Release™ requires an understanding of the fascial
system (or connective tissue).
Fascia is a tough connective
tissue which spreads throughout the body in a three
dimensional web from your head to your feet without
interruption. Trauma or inflammation can create a binding
down of fascia resulting in excessive pressure on nerves,
muscles, blood vessels, osseous structures and/or organs.
Since all of the standard tests such as x-rays, myelograms,
CAT scans, electromyography, etc., do not show the fascial
restrictions, it is thought that an extremely high percentage
of people suffering with pain, headaches and/or lack
of motion may be having fascial problems, but most go
undiagnosed.
Fascia is a specialized system
of the body which has an appearance similar to a spider's
web or a sweater. Fascia is very densely woven, covering
that interpenetrates every structure of our body. The
fascial system is not just a system of separate coverings:
it is actually one uninterrupted struc- ture which exists
from your head to your feet. |
|
In
this way you can begin to see each part of the entire
body is connected to every other part by the fascia,
like the yarn in a sweater

In the normal healthy state,
the fascia is relaxed and wavy in configuration. It
has the ability to stretch and move without restriction.
When we experience physical trauma or inflammation,
however, the fascia loses its flexibility. It becomes
very tight, and can be a source of tension to the rest
of the body. Trauma, such as a fall, whiplash, surgery
or just habitual poor posture over time has a cumulative
effect. The fascia can exert exces- sive pressure producing
pain,headaches and/or restriction of motion.
Myofascial Release™ allows
us to look at each patient as a unique individual. Our
therapy sessions are hands on treatments during which
our therapists use a multitude of Myofascial Release™
tech- niques and movement therapy. The goal of Myofascial
Release™ is to restore the individual's freedom,
so they may return to a pain free, active lifestyle.
|
Health professionals have long ignored the importance of
the entire fascial system. This glaring omission has severely
restricted your ability to relieve your symptoms and to heal.
Trauma and inflammatory responses create myofascial restrictions
that can produce crushing tensile pressures of approximately
2000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures.
This enormous pressure acts like a “straitjacket”
on muscles, nerves, blood vessels and bones producing the
symptoms of pain, headaches and restriction of motion.
The medical approach is to drug patients so they temporarily
are free from pain, but it does nothing about the “straitjacket”
of pressure that is causing the pain. Traditional physical,
occupational, and massage therapy treat the symptoms caused
by the “straitjacket” effect of a restricted myofascial
system, but does nothing about the ”straitjacket”
of pressure that causes and perpetuates the symptoms. This
is why so many patients have only temporary results never
seeming to get better with traditional therapy.
Only the John F. Barnes, PT approach to myofascial release
treats the entire myofascial complex eliminating the pressure
caused by the restricted myofascial system (the “straitjacket”)
that creates the symptoms. (1)
Why Myofascial Release Therapy for pain and stress relief?
Myofascial Release (MFR) is more beneficial to the patient
than massage therapy because it has much longer lasting results.
In fact, deep tissue massage actually causes rebound spasms
and increased pain a few days after the massage. This is especially
true for people with fibromyalgia. After eight years of providing
massage therapy, with thousands of satisfied clients, we discovered
the John Barnes Approach to Myofascial Release. Ninety five
percent of our clients at Rosemont Therapy have switched from
massage to MFR because they are actually healing and getting
better results. Massage only focuses on the muscles, whereas
MFR is much more comprehensive because it relieves restrictions
not only in the muscles, but also the connective tissue (fascia)
that covers muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs. MFR
increases blood circulation, relieves pressure on nerves and
eventually eliminates those “knots” in your muscles,
allowing for less pain and more freedom of movement. If you
want a “feel-good, temporary fix”, then have a
massage. If, however, you want to find the cause of the pain
and begin to heal, then you owe it to yourself to try Myofascial
Release. We offer a $20.00 discount on your first visit to
encourage you to try this amazing therapy that can return
you to a pain free active lifestyle. Dennis and Carol have
received extensive training in the John Barnes, PT Approach
to Myofascial Release and have used it exclusively in their
practice for the last two years.
Consider how pain medicine masks symptoms, does nothing
to correct the problem and can also result in overuse injuries.
Also, conventional treatments such as surgery, cortisone epidurals,
trigger point injections, ultrasound and chiropractic treatments
all have their positives, but do nothing to release the restricted
spider web of fascia that is restricting muscles, pinching
nerves, and constricting blood flow and causing pain.
MFR is the therapy to return you to a pain free active lifestyle.
MFR therapy also includes a home flexibility program to enhance
your individual treatments, which is not included in regular
massage therapy.
Women’s Health
“Myofascial Release Eases the Pain of Women’s
Health Problems”
John
F. Barnes, Tuesday May 28th, 2002
“One in four women ages 30 to 59 have experienced
urinary incontinence…some women undergo pelvic or
abdominal surgery to help resolve incontinence, menstrual,
or pelvic pain problems often associated with pelvic floor
muscle weakness following multiple child births. This solution,
however, often puts these same women at risk for developing
other pelvic pain problems…”

Many times chronic, persistent headaches, neck and back
pain can be resolved with Myofascial Release to the pelvic
area in addition to treating other areas of the body.
BODY CUSHION OPTION: alleviates pressure
on the neck, breasts, abdomen and low back while supporting
and decompressing the spine. The pregnant patient can lie
comfortably on her side or abdomen. The body cushion provides
relaxing comfort for post breast surgery patients, pregnant
women and clients who are uncomfortable lying face down on
a massage table.
PREGNANCY OPTION TABLE: We also have a special
option on our state-of-the-art table that allows pregnant
women to lie on their stomach in comfort without fear of harming
the fetus. This feels so good! The table can also be
placed in a comfortable reclining position, (especially good
for those with severe breathing difficulties).
Myofascial Personalized Home Treatment / Flexibility Program
Myofascial Freedom stretching is different from and more
effective than traditional stretching. Rather than overstretching
and “pushing through the barrier” approaches,
myofascial stretching gently engages the tissue restrictions,
then, just as gently, moves into the tissue to elongate or
“telescope” the tissue to allow releases. We teach
this wonderful and most effective technique in a, “one-on-one”,
60-minute appointment. These floor
exercises can be performed by the client in the comfort of
their own home. The client will be given a set of diagrams
upon completion of the program.
Home Exercise program teaches proper and safe use of exercise
balls and a foam roller. This program is designed to allow
the individual to self-treat between visits to ease fascial
restrictions and reduce their pain. Let Carol show you how
to use the “grapefruit sized” plastic ball to
alleviate those painful knots in as little as 5-15 minutes.
This one-on-one instruction is also with our exercise physiology
certified Registered Nurse by appointment only. Length of
appointment is One Hour.
Special Services
Intensive Treatments: Rosemont Therapy offers
a team approach by Carol and Dennis, both experienced therapists
to combine their insights and skills into your MFR treatment.
These intensive treatments can use both therapists in a single
session or may use one therapist in many sessions. Intensives
are usually two to three sessions per week for two to three
weeks. This type of treatment is designed to accelerate your
healing experience or to use when you have an acute problem,
severe pain or exacerbation of your symptoms.
Disabled services: We are proud to provide
a wheelchair ramp and an electric treatment table in our main
treatment room for easy access for those in wheelchairs and
for those people with other disabilities using walkers or
canes. (Please note: we require you to have an attendant to
help you transfer from your wheelchair to the table and back
again).
Pregnancy Option: We also have a special
option available on our state-of-the-art table that allows
pregnant women to lie on their stomach in comfort without
fear of harming the fetus or themselves. The table can also
be put in a semi-recumbent or a reclining position for those
needing that comfort option (especially good for those with
severe breathing difficulties).
Body Cushion Option: Supports the body
without pressure, alleviating pressure on the neck, breasts,
abdomen and low back while supporting and
decompressing the spine. Provides excellent comfort for post
breast surgery patients or large breasted women while being
treated.
Insurance coverage: Our services are covered
by your automobile insurance policy if you purchased a medical
payment option and meet certain other requirements set forth
by law. Ask us and we will gladly help you find out if you
qualify under your auto policy. Sorry, we do not take lien
cases. Workers Compensation or health insurance coverage is
not available at this time.
